Death of hundreds of fish still a mystery

Death of hundreds of fish still a mysteryNational Environment Commission‘s test does not explain the mystery behind the death of scores of fish in Dungsamchhu in Samdrup Jongkhar. Hundreds of dead fish were washed ashore Dungsamchhu in November, last year, baffling the locals.

Many had suspected the cause to be waste water entering the river from the sewage treatment plant.

However, NEC’s finding says except for slightly higher TSS contain in the water, most of the parametres are within the permissible limit.

TSS or Total Suspended Solids are present in sanitary waste water or many types of industrial waste water. A water body begins to lose its ability to support a diversity of aquatic as the level of TSS increases.

But, some of thromde officials, who visited the site soon after, found suspicious white powder in the river’s stagnant part.

“The physical and chemical test carried out indicates that Dungsamchhu is slightly polluted and not fit for drinking without treatment,” the result says.

The divisional forest office in Samdrup Jongkhar has not received the report and did not want to comment.
