Tangsibji’s shopkeepers asked to place “No Smoking” signboard Trongsa Dzongkhag Tshogdu has asked the shopkeepers in Tangsibji Gewog to place a “No Smoking” signboard in their shops in the wake of increasing floating population who are seen consuming tobacco products openly.

“Whether it is a hotel, bar or a shop, we have asked them to identify smoking rooms,” said Tangsibji’s Mangmi, Gyembo Dorji. He said if they fail to do so, they will be penalized.

Locals say the population in the gewog increased after the Tangsibji Hydro Energy Project and East-West Highway widening works started. Hundreds of workers have settled in the gewog.

“I see many people smoking in front of shops. It would be better if they could find a private place to do so. At least it would not affect the health of non-smokers,” said Tshangkha’s Tshogpa, Kinga Lhamo.

A shopkeeper in Tangsibji, Karma said people have stopped smoking in front of their shop after they put up the signboard.

There are over 290 households in Tangsibji Gewog.
