Bhutan’s remittance inflows have stagnated in the last five years. Until September this year, Bhutanese working abroad sent home only Nu 570M.
Bhutan’s remittance inflow, which is the smallest in the region, contributes less than a percentage to the economy’s gross domestic product. In 2004, Bhutan received only Nu 62M as remittance. Bhutan receives most of its remittances from the United States and Australia.
With its small share to GDP, remittance inflows to Bhutan do not have any significant impact on the economy. However,there others who believe that remittance has increased through the informal channels, since only a few uses the banking channel.
Remittances in the form of hard currency contribute to the economy’s foreign currency reserve.
