Bridging the gap between the public and MPs through public hearingsIn a bid to make people understand more about their roles and responsibilities, many parliamentarians are in favour of conducting press conferences and public hearings. So far, no such meetings have been organised and MPs’ relied on social media to share their official engagements.

Not many people know what their MPs are up to.

Sergithang-Tsirang Toed MP Novin Darlami said, whenever MPs visit their constituency, people ask about an MP’s roles and responsibilities, but even after explaining, people do not understand.

He said if press conferences and public hearings are conducted, then it will help in broadening peoples’ understanding of an MP’s roles and responsibilities.

Gasa MP Sangay Khandu said the MPs have been using only social media and when people from media asked any questions, they responded. Now the next logical step, he said, was to take it to the next level and hold press conferences and issue press releases.

Parliamentarians said, to make the trend of conducting press conferences and public hearings familiar and continual, each one of them must make use of such platforms.
