Bhutan’s GDP per capita has increased by US$ 334 between 2010 and 2014. A report published by the National Statistics Bureau recorded Bhutan’s GDP per capita at US$ 2,611 in 2014.
GDP per capita is a measure of the total value of the economy divided among its population. In other words, it is the total money earned by the economy divided equally among all the people.
The GDP per capita is a theoretical indicator of peoples’ income level in a country. According to the United Nations standard, Bhutan is considered a lower middle-income country.
Although, still within the LDC category, Bhutan’s GDP per capita is higher than many South Asian nations including Afghanistan, Nepal and India.
GDP per capita is also loosely used to interpret standards of living. A higher GDP per capita meant higher standards of living. However, many economists have criticized this interpretation, because many countries with higher GDP per capita did not necessarily enjoy a better living standard.
