Standardising products, a gateway to global market-Many Bhutanese products have not gained access to global markets with the products not being standardised for international market. Yesterday, the Bhutan standards Bureau observed the world standards day to create awareness on the need to standardise products.

Bhutan standards Bureau’s head of standardization division DR Chhetri said the international market require products that are standardized. The global market looks for products that are standardized by a standard body. it also facilitated business interaction.

He said the bureau has been conducting awareness programs among stakeholders including industries and business establishments.

Today, DR Chhetri said, the bureau was in the process of developing standards for fruits and vegetables. This will add value while the products are sold abroad. Today, Bhutan accredited for only steel, cement and bitumen.

He said many people were not aware of the importance of standards. Those coming to the awareness program from industries and business establishments did not always involve relevant officials, which did not help serve the purpose of the program. The bureau said the companies could come to the office if they need standards for the products.
