Road construction affects water sourceThe construction of a new road has affected the water source of Changzamtog area in Thimphu, aggravating the existing water shortage problem in the area, according to the residents.

Residents said the construction of road above their water source has destroyed a few water tanks and pipelines. Unlike earlier days, they now have to come at least three times a day to check and clear the water pipes.

“After the road construction began, water at the source started to dry. More than 15 drums and several pipes have been damaged by the boulders. We don’t have enough drums now. When it rains we get complaints from the tenants of water being muddy,” said a resident Balban Rai.

Another resident, Kencho Wangmo said they to ask their neighbours water to cook. She said her throat started hurting after drinking stored water.

“When it rains the water is unsafe for drinking. We replaced water pipes many times but it gets damaged. They do replace the damaged pipes but with limited pipe rolls which is not enough,” said another resident, Kinga Norbu.Road construction affects water source--

The construction of the road is a private undertaking. BBS tried to get in touch with the construction company for their views. But despite several attempts, there was no response.

“When it rains the water is unsafe for drinking. We replaced water pipes many times but it gets damaged. They do replace the damaged pipes but with limited pipe rolls which is not enough”.

Thimphu Thrompon, Kinlay Dorjee said none of the residents has filed in a complaint with the municipality.

“If there are problems, the citizens who are suffering should either come and speak to us or see the National Environment Commission. Till date we have resolved many problems because people have come to see us”.

Kinlay Dorjee added clearance for the construction was given after a thorough assessment by the National Environment Commission (NEC).

The NEC refused to comment.
