Third suspect allegedly involved in Taxi driver murder surrenders

(Update): The third suspect, allegedly involved in the murder of a 50-year-old taxi driver, surrendered to Thimphu Police on Saturday. “Soon after the announcement in electronic and print media, RBP received inputs from an informer that the suspect is at Kakarvitta in Nepal with his distant relatives,” said the Chief of Police, Brigadier Kipchu Namgyel.

He said the police managed to convince the suspect to surrender through his relatives.

The police also said the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation.

The driver was found brutally murdered in Thimphu April 21.

In a statement to the police, the suspects have said they committed the crime after the taxi driver threatened to inform police about the contraband substance they were carrying unless they pay higher fare than agreed.

They had agreed to pay Nu 2,000 initially. But when they couldn’t fork out Nu 5,000, a brawl had ensued following which the driver was stabbed repeatedly and his throat slit open.

Other suspects, one main and an accomplice, were arrested on last week.

The case, the police said, is voluntary manslaughter. They said it will now be forwarded to the Office of Attorney General and then the court.
