The Cabinet is reviewing the revised urban taxes proposed by the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement. It includes land and building taxes in all four major thromdes of Thimphu, Phuentshogling, Gelegphu and Samdrup Jongkhar.
The rates have not changed since 1992. Thromde officials said it was high time that the taxes be revised. They said it was necessary to revise the taxes as the government wanted thromdes to be financially self-sufficient.
Following the cabinet review, it will be deliberated in the parliament, most likely in the upcoming session in May. Meanwhile, the finance ministry is yet to approve on the new waste charges proposed by the Thimphu Thromde. Once approved, hotels, private residential houses, offices and shops in all four thromdes will have to pay for waste collection.
