The Local Leaders of Langthil Gewog in Trongsa have filed a petition to the Supreme Court demanding justice for detaining their gup, Lham Dorji for a night.
Trongsa District Court had detained Lham Dorji for contempt of court after he failed to turn up on February 12.
They put up the petition through Langthil’s Tshogpa, yesterday.
First part of the petition says they are suing the Trongsa District Court’s Drangpon for detaining Lham Dorji.
“I have lost my reputation. It is not fair. For me, being detained for a day, a month and a year is the same,” said Lham Dorji.
The second part says no local leaders should be summoned in courts for cases that do not involve them.
“There is no support from judiciary and dzongkhag. We are worried if such incidents occur again we will be implicated.”
Five Chiwog Tshogpas and Mangmis have signed the three-paged petition.
“After we do the intermediation, the court shouldn’t summon us as witness,” said Yuedrongchhoeling Chiwog Tshogpa, Tshering Dorji. He said in case they do not reach court on time there are chances of them getting detained.
The gup, who the court had deemed a witness to a monetary case, was asked to produce written evidence in person to the court in February. But, the gup had sent his Tshogpa to deliver the statement.
Meanwhile, the Dagana District Court sentenced Lham Dorji to six months imprisonment for contempt of court related to a different case, today.
The Langthil Gup had to pay Nu 340,000 to the present Khebisa Gup, Ugyen Dorji by November 2014.
Ugyen Dorji had filed a case against the gup for failing to pay.
The Dagana District Court said the gup was imprisoned for failing to obey the verdict.
The gup paid Nu 23,500 to the court in lieu of imprisonment.
