The MPs of the National Council wishing to contest next NC election can do so without resigning. The clause, which states so, is part of the National Council Amendment Bill 2014, which was endorsed in the joint-sitting, today.
Fifty nine of the 64 parliamentarians present voted in favour of the bill.
However, the contentious clause in the bill, which says a person has to have 10 years experience to contest for a seat in the NC, was removed from the bill. It will be taken up when they discuss Election Act 2008.
The Legislative Committee of the National Council had drafted the amendment bill and had tabled it for discussion during the previous session.
