SoaringPotatoPrice-SJ.The price of potatoes has almost doubled this time, much to the relief of farmers in the East. Last year, a kilogram of potato used to cost Nu.17-20 a kilogram. A kilogram of potato now fetches about Nu.35.

The officials say the price of potatoes increased because the bordering town of Assam is yet to harvest potatoes.

The potatoes from the East are being sold at Samdrup Jongkhar auction. However, the farmers fear the constant strikes in Assam could hamper their business.

But, the Food Corporation of Bhutan in Samdrup Jongkhar pays them well in advance, during strikes.

Every day, about 15 truckloads of potatoes are sold in the auction.
