Avacado, the most popular fruit in ZhemgangAvacado is the most popular and widely grown fruit in Zhemgang. Thanks to Dasho Nishioka who introduced the fruit in the country in the 1960s.

Late Dasho Nishioka, who was from Japan and came to Bhutan in 1964, played a major role in starting mechanised farming in Bhutan.

The villagers are reaping the benefits of the visionary services left behind by Dasho Nishioka in the Dzongkhag.

The locals have not only found enough to feed themselves, but also market their produce.

“If we can work hard we get about seven to eight sacks of Avacados every year. We have to give the trees enough manure. But, the trees live only for about five years,” said Karma, a villager from Zhemgang.

Avacados are locally known as Japan Guli, by the people as a way of remembering Late Dasho Nishioka, who introduced the fruit in their villages.

It fetches at Nu. 150 a kilogram in Zhemgang and between Nu.300-400 a kilogram in the capital.
