First Bhutanese PM to chair UNESCAP

UNESCAP-Lyonchhen Tshering Tobgay will formally assume the Chairmanship of the 70th session of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) in Bangkok, tomorrow.

This would be the first time a Bhutanese Prime Minister holding the position at the 62 member regional body since becoming a member in 1972.

As Chairman, Lyonchhen will guide the work of the Commission for a period of one year.

UNESCAP is the most comprehensive of the UN’s five Regional Commissions and the largest UN body serving the Asia and the Pacific region, home to 4.1bn people.

The Commission meets annually at the Ministerial level to review and discuss important economic and social issues pertaining to inclusive and sustainable development in the region.

Key issues under consideration of the 70th session of the Commission include, Asia Pacific Perspectives on the Post 2015 Development Agenda and Sustainable Development Financing, Regional Connectivity for Shared Prosperity, challenges to inclusive and sustainable development in the region.
