LhayulIrrigationChannel. It has been two years since the construction of an irrigation channel began in Lhayul Chiwog under Chhudzom Gewog in Sarpang. It is yet to complete.

Construction of the seven kilometre irrigation channel began in July 2012. So far only about 60 percent of the works have been completed.

Farmers depend on rainwater

Farmers in Lhayul Chiwog depend completely on rainwater for paddy cultivation. So when there is no rain or less rainfall during plantation season, farmers either cultivate maize and vegetables or leave it fallow.

Farmers said when there is less rainfall, forget water for irrigation, they don’t even get enough water for drinking. Farmers complained that the irrigation channel was supposed to be completed by last year.

Delay in construction

In the meantime, the contractor involved in the construction said, earlier they faced a lot of difficulty in transporting sand, stones and cement, to the water source site as it did not have access to road.

He added, although the chiwog is now connected with a farm road, yet the road condition is no better during the monsoon season. Consequently, vehicles could carry only less construction materials.

With more than a half of the work complete, the remaining is expected to be done within December this year.
