Housing crunch to ease in Phuentshogling-NHDCLColony.Come September and the housing crunch in Phuentshogling will be slightly eased. This is because the housing colony construction undertaken by the National Housing Development Corporation is nearing completion.

Despite of the construction getting delayed by almost five months, the news of new houses sends a sigh of relief against the ever-growing housing problem in Phuentshogling.

Three buildings have been constructed for this phase with eight units each.

While one of the buildings is ready, few electrical and masonry works are underway in the other two.

Each apartment has two bedrooms, two toilets, a hall, a kitchen and a store room. The rent has been fixed at Nu. 5,000 a month.

According to Tendup Lepcha, the Corporation’s Liaison officer in Phuentshogling, for 24 apartments, they have received 229 applicants.

He added that those who had applied first will have an added advantage during the allotment.

The office has also identified about 3.5 acres of land near the old Phuentshogling hospital area where similar houses will be constructed.

For now, the office is in the process of registering the land under their name. This, he said will further ease the housing crunch.

Meanwhile, though no official reports have been released, it is estimated that over a thousand Bhutanese live across the border.

Most people continue living away from Phuentshogling, not just because there are shortage of apartments, but also because of rising rents.
