KRIIGrantJapan’s KR II grant to Bhutan will be discontinued from next year. Similarly other KR II grant recipient countries will not get the grant from next year.

The rationale behind the move is because the Japanese Government wants to review the grant scheme. Under the grant scheme, power tillers and other farm mechanisations are provided.

However, officials of JICA in Bhutan said the Japanese government will look at other possibilities of providing farm mechanisation to Bhutan. The government’s recent request for 1,450 power tillers has been approved by the Japanese government in principle.

The first KR II grant to Bhutan came in 1984 and till date, Bhutan has received more than 2,000 power tillers and some other farm mechanisation.
