One of the political parties, Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT), says they are deeply concerned about the government’s initiative to promote electric car business in the country.
DNT says providing tax free incentive on the import of electric cars while heavily taxing up to 180 percent on the import other cars, will further widen the existing gap between rich and poor.
“While we acknowledge our environmental concerns, electric cars are expensive and of less utility value to our general people. They are beyond the reach of our poor and middle class people,” states a press release from DNT.

The release says such initiative would hurt middle class people, who have saved up to buy their first car in their life, the most. “Since our country is going through difficult times in terms of economy and unemployment, whatever limited resources we have must be channelled to serve the people.”
They say the middle class people, who are affected the most, must be uplifted first. “We must focus more on Equity, Economy, Education and Employment, which matter to all the people, especially the vast majority of our poor and middle class people.”
