NC reinstates the 10-year requirement clause

NC reinstates the 10-year requirement clause. Last week, the National Assembly removed the clause from the National Council Amendment Bill that a minimum of 10-year work experience would be required to contest for a seat in the National Council in the future. But today, the National Council reinstated the clause.

The National Assembly removed the clause saying it was unconstitutional as the Constitution precisely states the candidates can contest in the elections as long as they are of 25-year-old.

However, an Eminent Member, Dasho Karma Yezer Raydi, argued the clause is in line with the Constitution. He reasoned that one of the articles in the Constitution states that a candidate for an elective office needs to fulfill all the necessary qualifications prescribed in the electoral laws.

Most members in the House were of the same opinion. So, the House reinstated the clause in the National Council Amendment Bill.

Now, the Bill will be tabled in the joint sitting of the parliament.
