After losing their crops to wild animals for years, the farmers of Langchenphu Toe village in Samdrup Jongkhar are expecting a good harvest finally. A solar electric fencing has been installed with assistance from the Wild Life Protection of Bhutan to keep wildlife at bay.
Prior to the fencing, the village was plagued with human-wildlife conflict. They lost most of their crops to the animals, especially elephants.
“We now don’t have to worry about buying rice and vegetables from market,” said a farmer, Nal Bahadur.
Another farmer, Bhakta Bahadur Subba, said the wild animals also attacked people sometimes. “The threat has become less now.”
Before the electrical fencing was put in place, farmers had to guard their field throughout the night.
Langchenphu Toe has around 60 households with a population of about 250 people.
