Hundreds of youth have applied to the Overseas Employment Agencies to work abroad. There are four licensed agencies in Thimphu, who are exploring job opportunities overseas. The Global Recruitment Overseas Employment Agency has been able to send 6 Bhutanese to work in Doha earlier, this month.

However the other three agencies have not been able to send any Bhutanese to work overseas. The Employ Bhutan Overseas Agency is exploring job opportunities at UAE. The other two agencies, TUSK Overseas Employment Agency and Druk Metser Ter are exploring job markets in Thailand and Belgium.

Meanwhile, the Labour and Human Resources Ministry had send 209 jobseekers abroad including nine to Doha. The 200 left for India, last month. They will be trained in spa and beauty for six months and after that they given employment in five –star hotels in India.

The Ministry plans to send 5,000 to 7,000 Bhutanese to work overseas annually. By the end of the 11th Plan, they are planning to send some 30,000 Bhutanese under Overseas Employment Programme. To ease the unemployment pressure in the country, the overseas employment programme is a commitment of the government to explore opportunities aboard.

A regulation on Bhutanese Overseas Employment Agent will also be launched tomorrow.

Will the government able to achieve its target of 30,000 overseas employments in next five years? How challenging is it for agencies in exploring job opportunities overseas?
