Reduce number of schools to a quality fewIn what could be a major educational reform, the Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay, says he has a vision to reduce the number of schools across the country to few quality schools.

The Prime Minister, who is currently on a tour to the East to sign performance agreement, is also seeking the opinion of the local leaders and the civil servants on his vision.

Taking example of Trashi Yangtse Dzongkhag, the Prime Minister said it would be better to take care of just four schools rather than 30, currently in the Dzongkhag.

However, he clarified; it is not the final decision but an opinion. “It is just a proposal to you.” He said if the number of schools is brought down; there could be classes from pre-primary to 10 with boarding facility for all the students.

Lyonchhen said there could one separate school for class 11 and 12 students.

He said if students from Classes PP to 10 can be kept together in a single school, the students could study properly in a single school without having to go to other schools. The teachers will be able to share their knowledge and ultimately provide better education to the students.

But for the idea to materialise, the Prime Minister said, a lot of money would have to be invested in constructing classrooms, dining halls, hostels and to provide meals and other stationeries to the students..

If he vision receives public support, the Prime Minister said, his government will turn his vision into a reality.
