Is quota an option to encourage more women to join politics? A few panellists of the national consultation conference on women in politics said the term ‘quota’ has a negative connotation and stigma attached to it. There were others who said women need a push to take up leadership roles and if its ‘quota’, so be it.

There were also some who believed that it is about providing enabling environment to facilitate women to come forward instead of reserved quota. Some said it is important to consult rural people and that deliberation at all levels is required.

A majority believed something has to done to encourage more women’s participation in politics. As compared to the 2008 elections, the  number of women elected in the parliament dropped by half in 2013 elections. Only four women were elected.

Meanwhile, the task force members also drew Terma Linca Statement to take the issue forward.
