Works at Education City site stoppedFollowing a notification from DHI INFRA, the supplementary works at the Education City site has been stopped except for the construction of the bridge. The works include blacktopping of the 2.5 km road leading up to the Education City, electricity connectivity and water supply.

DHI INFRA’s notification issued on March 10 had mentioned that the blacktopping of the road be immediately stopped. An earlier notification on March 4, again from DHI INFRA, issued verbally, had asked for the same.

The construction cost of the road amounts to around Nu.83 Million.

Kelwang Construction Private Limited has already spent about Nu.15 Million procuring the materials for the blacktopping.

Kelwang Construction Private Limited’s Chief Engineer, S.B.Suberi, said until further notice, the raw materials will remain at the site. “In the meantime, we will continue with other works.”

However, the Chief Engineer said the letter from DHI Infra also indicated that the decision was not final and the contractor may be asked to complete the task.

The Chairman of the Bhutan Education City and Minster for Works and Human Settlement, Dorji Choden, is out of station currently.

The government decided to shut down the Education City Project after it has been termed illegal by the National Land Commission.

The concrete work of the project began in 2011.
