Bhutan International Marathon

Bhutan International MarathonThe Bhutan International Marathon was held on Sunday. Over 200 participants from over 20 countries took part in the event.

The Marathon was divided in to two categories: 42-kilometre Full Marathon from Tashithang in Gasa and Half Marathon was 21-kilometre from Khabisa to Punakha Dzong.

In the Half Marathon, Tshewang Dorji managed to finish the race in 1 hour 18 minutes and 47 seconds. Nima Lhazin finished first among the women in 1 hour 41 minutes and 26 seconds.

In the Full Marathon, Sangay Wangchuk crossed the finish line in 2 hours 38 minutes and 28 seconds. While among women, Reika Yoshii from Japan crossed the finish line in 3 hours 42 minutes and 38 seconds.

The participants set of from their starting positions at approximately 8 AM. They ran at altitudes ranging from over 4000 feet to over 5600 feet above the sea level.

The age range of the participants also varied. There were runners as old as in their 70s and as young as 11 years old.

One of the youngest, Tshering Choden,11, is a Class V student from Kabesa Middle Secondary School. She was the marathon champion in her school.

One of the oldest is 60 year olf Frank from the USA, who completed the half marathon in 2 hours and 47 minutes with his wife. Suzan Khiefer, a geologist, is the oldest woman participating in the race.

Most of the runners completed the race.

The Marathon was organised by the Bhutan Olympic Committee.
