Two applicants, who were shortlisted to set up private television stations in the country, are waiting for approval from the government. Singye Group of Companies and Rabsel Media were among five candidates who had applied.

The Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay, during a press session, had said if the applicants’ proposals are consistent and fulfil all criteria, there is no reason for the government to reject them. “As far as we are concerned if there is room for private TV, if there are private citizens who want to invest in their private TV, if it is going to be profitable and if their proposal is consistent, fulfills the requirement for a private TV, we have no reasons to stop them.”

However, he has said it is not for one person to decide whether it is good or bad. “We have systems in place. We have rules in place and we should follow that.”
