Women quota in politics needs to be understood properly- Lyonpo Dorji ChodenThe Works and Human Settlement Minister, Dorji Choden said women quota in politics needs to be understood properly. She was talking to the journalists during Meet the Press session, yesterday.

Lyonpo said there is a misconception when it comes to women quota. “Many people just think in terms of numbers. But, we are going beyond the numbers.”

The Minister said they will not compromise on the requirements, in terms of qualifications, in terms of experience, and in terms of any other qualifications that are required to participate just as men do. “We will not compromise on that.”

Lyonpo also said Bhutan’s political transition requires women to participate in the public affairs. She said the government is focused on increasing women participation in politics at the local and national level.

She said after much consultation with experts, the government is working on building capacity of women, creating a conducive working environment for women and creating awareness about the importance of women participation in politics.
