MonggarDzongThe newly-expanded Monggar Dzong was consecrated today, coinciding with the dzongkhag’s annual Tshechu. The consecration ceremony was presided over by Gyeltshen, Trulku Rinpochhe. The Speaker, Jigme Zangpo, also graced the ceremony.MonggarDzong.

The need for the additional structures was felt given the growing number of civil servants and monks.  The expansion of the dzong began in mid 2010.

“…The space available at the present location seems not enough,” said the Monggar Dzongda, Sherab Tenzin. He said the public would benefit from the expansion, as they will not have to visit different places looking for officials. “All the officials will now work from the same building.”

The history of the Dzong dates back to 1940s. It was constructed after the weather condition in Zhonggar became unbearably hot. The Zhonggar Dzong had become very old by then.

MonggarDzong“According to some history, it is during the time of Dzongpon, Dorji Penjor, and his son Kinzang Wangdi, that the Monggar Dzong was constructed.” Sherab Tenzin said there are many people who believe, the present Kuenray was constructed by Zhongar Dzongpon Kinzang Wangdi. The dzongda said the Drasha was constructed, later, by Dasho Babu Tashi and Babu Karchung.
