SportsMeet-SamtseA four-day Annual Sports and Cultural event was recently held in Dorokha. Besides sports competition, a musical competition called the ‘Dorokha Idol’ and a Dzongkha essay competition were also held among different schools under Dorokha Dungkhag.

A three-day public holiday was even declared for civil servants in Dorokha for the event. The organisers and participants told our reporter, Karma Wangdi, that the event was a successful one.

The only issue appeared to be with the football field. The students complained that the football ground is small and not in good condition, subjecting players to injuries. The need for a public football ground for Dorokha Dungkhag was raised by the end of event.

“We participate in this event annually and do not have other problems, but the football ground needs to be upgraded,” said Tshering Dorji, one of the participants.

Another participant, Gajari Rai agrees. “With no proper lines drawn on the football ground, it is not easy to play. If we could be provided a proper football ground, it would be excellent for the people of Dorokha Dungkhag.”

Some said that a bigger football field can be used for other public gatherings and to celebrate big events.

The Secretary of the Dorokha Sports and Cultural Association, Sonam Lhendrup, shares that the Association has a proposal in the pipeline for a new public football ground. “The immediate need for the Dorokha Sports and Cultural Association is a proper football ground and we are working towards a proper ground for Dorokha Dungkhag.”

Besides the issue with the football field, the Dorokha Dungpa, Kuenzang Thinley, said the annual event encourages people of all the four Gewogs to come together and also to provide a platform for talent recognition in the villages.

“The event aims to bring peace and harmony in the community through games and cultural activities, and through this also contribute to Gross National Happiness,” he added.

Twenty two teams from three Gewogs took part in the football tournament and 11 teams in volleyball. There was participation from all the fours Gewogs under Dorokha.

The event, which was held at the Dorokha Middle Secondary School concluded on August 18.
