Tarayana-FairThe clock tower square in Thimphu where the annual Tarayana Fair is being hosted is abuzz with activities. The 10th Tarayana Fair opened this morning.

Her Royal Highness Azhi Kesang Wangmo Wangchuck graced the opening of the 10th annual Tarayana Fair.

The fair this year also marks the 10th anniversary of the Tarayana Foundation.

The foundation was established in May 2003 by Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck. The foundation works to help bridge local needs of disadvantaged remote communities with larger national initiatives.

Queen Mother, Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, also acknowledged the support and encouragement bestowed to the Foundation by His Majesty the fourth Druk Gyalpo.

“Tarayana might have remained a distant dream without the encouragement and continue support of my king, Jigme Singye Wangchuck, who continues to inspire me to serve the citizens’ need especially those in difficult circumstances in remote villages.”

Currently, Tarayana as a civil society organization (CSO) is engaged in helping 98 villages in nine Dzongkhags.

Her Royal Highness Azhi Kezang Wangmo Wangchuck, the Chief Guest at the opening applauded the foundation’s work and initiatives in helping needy ones over the past one decade.

Her Royal Highness Azhi Kezang Wangmo Wangchuck also presented the Former Vice President of World Bank Dr. Mieko Nishimizu a special award for her unwavering support to the foundation.

The three day fair showcases food, handicrafts and other local hand made products.
