The Trongsa District Court has sentenced a 21-year-old man to nine years in prison for impregnating a 15-year-old girl.

The man, a former monk, and the girl were living together.

A brawl had broken out between the girl and her aunt. The girl had been taken to a hospital for battery case examination. That’s when the authorities found out that she was a minor and pregnant. The case was reported to the police. She was eight months pregnant by then.

The man was then arrested and charge sheeted to the court.

The section 183 of the Penal Code of Bhutan says, a defendant shall be guilty of the offence of rape of a child above the age of 12 years, if the defendant has sexual intercourse with a child between the age of 12 to 18 years.

The man, who is in the police custody, says he wants to appeal to the High Court.
