The Divisional Forest Office in Haa seized 26 horses carrying illegal sandalwood in Bji Gewog at around 3 am yesterday. Following a tip-off, the officials were able stop 863kgs of sandalwood from being smuggled to china where it fetches a good price. The offender will be fined around Nu.640,000.
The sandalwood was brought in from India since it is not available in Bhutan.
