What makes a country attractive to investors is not just how much money they can make, but also how confident they are in the systems that protect their investments. As Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) works to attract international investors, it aims to build a financial system supported by strong institutions, clear regulations and modern technology. The Chairman of Gelephu Investment Development Corporation shared this vision at a press conference in Gelephu today.
As Gelephu Mindfulness City sets its sights on becoming an international financial centre, Bhutan wants to offer an economy where innovation and investment go hand in hand with transparency, accountability and trust.

“We have built a reputation for trust in Bhutan, and I think that will be our bedrock. Beyond His Majesty’s vision, His Majesty has also emphasised the importance of ethical and mindful economic growth for GMC. So, investors can be assured that the necessary infrastructure will be in place to ensure transparency in how capital flows, how money is managed and accounted for, and how anti-money laundering measures are implemented. All of this is to ensure that we attract mindful and efficient capital to build the economy through GMC,” said Ujjwal Deep Dahal, Chairman, Gelephu Investment Development Corporation.
To support this ambition, GMC is working to establish key financial institutions and safeguards, including a central bank and an anti-money laundering framework.
“The recent announcement on the Central Bank and the anti-money laundering framework are some of the basic building blocks of a trust economy. Beyond these institutions, Bhutan’s larger philosophy, including Gross National Happiness and our commitment to environmental protection, also contributes to that trust,” he said.
Technology will also play a role in strengthening the financial system. The National Digital Identity system, for instance, allows people to share verified credentials securely, helping make digital services safer and more accountable.
According to the chairman, they aim to create a trusted financial ecosystem that attracts international investment.
