The Tsirang District Court has sentenced six men to nine years in prison each for raping a girl. The incidents took place at different locations in Tsirang between 2024 and 2025. The judgment was passed last month.
The six men are aged between 28 and 36. Three are from Tsirang, while the others are from Sarpang, Chhukha and Punakha.
According to the court judgment, one of the convicts contacted the girl through mobile phones and social media. The judgment does not establish whether all six men knew one another.
The court found that the men raped the girl despite knowing that she was a minor. In one instance, a convict forced her to consume alcohol and smoke before raping her.
The judgment also states that the convicts used different means to influence or silence the girl, including threats, cash transfers to her bank account and mobile data. Some later apologised for their actions.
The six men have also been ordered to pay compensation to the girl. The amounts range from Nu 22,500 to 45,000 each, to be paid within three months of the judgment.
