Bhutan’s busiest land gateway has a new face. The Tourist Service Centre at the Regional Immigration Office in Phuentshogling reopened on Friday after a major renovation. Officials say the makeover is more than just about comfort. With tourist numbers climbing again, they say that the impression made at the border can decide whether visitors keep coming.

For tens of thousands of visitors arriving overland, this is where their journey into Bhutan begins. And for many, this is where a lasting impression of the country is either won or lost.

The renovated centre blends modern amenities with traditional Bhutanese architecture. Visitors now have Wi-Fi, charging points, a cafeteria, and a reading corner to make waiting more comfortable. Priority services have also been introduced for senior citizens, families with infants, and persons with disabilities.

The works cost more than Nu 5.4 M.

“The number of counters has increased, and it is more spacious. So, it will be easier for the guests to get the permit done. Moreover, with the cafeteria coming up, guests can relax and chill while the work is done,” said Harish Morwani, Secretary, Jaigaon Travel Association, India.

The upgrade comes as Bhutan’s tourism rebounds. The country received almost 150 thousand tourists in the first half of 2026, which is an increase of around 48 per cent compared to the same period last year. The majority of them were regional tourists entering the country through Phuentshogling.

“As of July, this year, over 91,000 tourists entered the country through Phuentshogling. This indicates an increase in the number of tourists visiting the country. As such, we need improved facilities and infrastructure. If we fail to do so, we risk losing them after the first visit,” said Sonam Wangyel, Home Secretary.

For now, the renovated centre stands as more than a gateway. It is Bhutan’s first handshake with the world, and a quiet bet that the journey which begins here will not be the last.
