A simple idea is making a big difference in Gelephu. Newly built public resting spaces, complete with fans, charging points, and shelter, are offering relief to residents, taxi drivers, and visitors navigating the town’s heat and bustle.
These newly constructed wooden resting places are now a common sight in Gelephu. Built in four key locations, including the hospital area, taxi parking, bus booking counters, and busy town zones, the facilities are designed for maximum public use.
Equipped with fans and plug points to charge electronic devices, the sheds are offering much-needed relief, especially during hot days. And the response is immediate.
Som Maya Tamang,a resident said, “With these facilities, we can now sit comfortably with fans while we wait. It’s very convenient, and I thank the authorities for this.”
Another resident Tara Devi Rai said, “Earlier, we had to deal with both heat and rain when visiting the town. Now, it’s much easier. This is a very good initiative.”
Similarly, Lal Bdr Tamang said, “We didn’t have such facilities before. Now that we do, I feel very happy.”
The benefits extend beyond residents. Taxi drivers, who often spend hours waiting for passengers, say the sheds have changed their working conditions.
Migmar Gheshing, a taxi driver said, “Earlier we used to look for shades while waiting for passengers. It was very difficult, especially during hot days. But with the facility like this, it is better.”
Likewise, Nakul Ghalley said, “We used to take shelter under the trees before we had this. We requested the thromde and our association for such a facility. This will not only benefit taxi drivers but passengers as well.”
Beyond public resting spaces, similar structures have also been set up for traffic police to carry out surveillance duties. Designated smoking areas have also been introduced to encourage responsible smoking.
Gelephu Thrompon Tshering Norbu said, “The facilities are made of wood and in keeping with the vision of the Gelephu Mindfulness City. The facilities are not only aesthetically pleasing, but are also installed with amenities such as fans and charging points. Likewise, we also have a few designated smoking areas.”
With over Nu 2 M spent, the initiative is proving to be a small but impactful step, making everyday life in Gelephu a little more comfortable.
