Coinciding with the Birthday of His Majesty The King tomorrow, the Annual Film Festival will be held in Punakha. Preparations have been completed, and a full rehearsal took place this evening. Twenty-four films, including three short films, will compete across 21 categories.

The festival will take place at the  Punakha Higher Secondary School’s playground.

Unlike previous years, spectators will enjoy the programme against the stunning backdrop of Punakha Dzong, promising a truly memorable experience. For the last few days, the preparations had been underway.

This marks the second time Punakha has hosted the festival.

More than twenty Bhutanese films will compete in over twenty categories. From the horror film to major box-office drama productions, several of the country’s biggest hits have secured nominations. Actors, actresses, and other members of the film fraternity will also take to the stage for special performances.

Bhutan has celebrated the film festival for more than two decades. The event encourages filmmakers to produce new works regularly and fosters healthy competition within the industry. It also promotes cultural preservation, strengthens the film sector, empowers youth, encourages global exchange, and contributes to the national economy.

The Bhutan InfoComm and Media Authority is organising the festival in collaboration with the Bhutan Broadcasting Service, with support from the Punakha District Administration. The event received funding through the Economic Stimulus Plan.
