Construction works for the 120 megawatt-peak Wobthang Solar Photovoltaic Project in Tang Gewog of Bumthang are expected to begin by September this year, marking a significant step in Bhutan’s efforts to diversify its renewable energy portfolio. The Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC) has completed the project’s feasibility study and consultation meetings. With an estimated cost of USD 63 M, the project will be implemented through an engineering, procurement and construction contract, alongside a comprehensive environmental and social management plan.
The DGPC conducted two rounds of public consultations with the Bumthang district administration, Tang gewog officials, and residents. All stakeholders expressed strong support for the project, which will now cover around 315 acres of land, slightly more than the initially planned 300 acres.
The DGPC plans to award the contract by June, with construction likely to begin by September. The project is scheduled for completion within 18 months and is expected to be operational by the first half of 2028.
Once commissioned, electricity from the solar plant will be fed directly into the Bhutan Power Corporation’s grid.
The Wobthang Solar PV Project aligns with Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Development Roadmap 2024 and the National Energy Policy 2025. Together, the policies aim to add 5,000 megawatts of solar capacity and complement the overall power generation goal to be achieved by 2040.
Under the 13th Five-Year Plan, the government has proposed Nu 902 M for the development of alternative renewable energy projects.
Another Nu 365 M has been committed for other solar initiatives, including rooftop solar in Thimphu and Paro, rural energy supply projects and solar thermal projects.
As Bhutan remains heavily dependent on hydropower, solar energy offers an alternative, particularly during winter, when river flows and hydropower generation decline. Solar power generation during bright winter days is expected to reduce energy imports and strengthen national energy security.
