While many of us have closets full of clothes, some families in remote parts of the country still struggle to meet basic clothing needs. A youth-led social initiative, Gola Gola Bhutan, is changing that by distributing second-hand clothes to vulnerable communities, bringing relief while promoting sustainable consumption.
Some 40 locals, especially elders, gathered outside a gewog meeting hall. This time, they are not here for any meeting.
The youth-led initiative collects second-hand clothes from donors across the country. These clothes are carefully sorted, cleaned, and redistributed to communities in need.
In Trashigang’s Phongmey Gewog, villagers eagerly received the donations. After a brief introduction to the initiative, people began picking through the piles, selecting the clothes they needed most.

The scene shows urgency and hope as families search for suitable clothing from the donated items. The initiative has brought much relief to villagers, many of whom struggle with rising living costs and limited income opportunities.
As they leave, they pledged to reduce clothing waste.

“I did not have proper clothes to wear, all I owned were worn-out rags. I am grateful to have received so many clothes,” said Tshering, Resident, Phongmey Gewog, Trashigang.
“We do not have money to buy our own clothes because they are expensive. We are grateful to have received this support,” said Jomo Pemo, Resident, Phongmey Gewog, Trashigang.
“Everything has become very expensive these days. Receiving this donation has helped us save some of money, and we are truly grateful,” said Chaten, Villager, Phongmey Gewog, Trashigang.
“I am thankful to have received these clothes. They help keep me warm,” said Sangay Lhamo, Villager, Phongmey Gewog, Trashigang.
The organisation has been carrying out similar distributions in different districts, reaching rural communities while raising awareness about sustainable consumption.
“We consider fairness a very important factor in the distribution of clothes. In collaboration with the local government, we ensure that assistance reaches those who are genuinely in need. Clothing distribution is carried out once a year in every district,” said Ugyen Namgay Phuntsho, Gola Gola Bhutan.
With its ongoing activities in Trashigang, Gola Gola Bhutan continues to combine social service with environmental responsibility, bringing both warmth and relief to those who need it most.
As the distribution wrapped up, people were seen leaving with bundles of joy. It is a small but meaningful relief made possible through Gola Gola Bhutan’s initiative that not only gives warmth but also dignity.
