The newly established nursery at Pelzomthang in Pema Gatshel’s Nganglam Dungkhag is creating new opportunities for farmers in the eastern parts of the country. By focusing on high-value fruit saplings and ornamental plants, the initiative aims to support sustainable farming, create employment opportunities and help farmers increase their income. It is also expected to meet the growing needs of the upcoming Gelephu Mindfulness City.

The nursery was recently inaugurated, marking a fresh start for agri-based entrepreneurship and skills development in the area.

With rows of young saplings and well-cared, nurtured plants, the nursery located near the dry port at Pelzomthang is focused on building a strong future.

“I felt that if we can establish and supply high-value plants, we can not only meet future demands within the country, including Gelephu Mindfulness City, but also explore opportunities to export beyond Bhutan,” said Rinchen Pelzang, Proprietor, Thra Lam Lam Nursery, Nganglam.

What makes the initiative unique is its inclusive approach. The nursery is open to farmers and others who want to learn orchard management and nursery skills.

Through hands-on guidance and shared experience, it hopes to encourage more people to take up high-value fruit cultivation and ornamental plant production.

“Those who come forward seeking guidance, we try our best to support them with the knowledge and experience we have. I am always willing to provide technical assistance wholeheartedly, though I am still learning myself,” said Rinchen Pelzang, Proprietor, Thra Lam Lam Nursery, Nganglam.

In addition to fruit saplings, the nursery will also focus on growing high-value aromatic woods, such as agarwood, red sandalwood, and white sandalwood, which are known for their long-term economic and environmental benefits.

As Gelephu Mindfulness City gradually takes shape, initiatives like this nursery are building a strong foundation by creating skills, jobs and sustainable livelihoods for the future.
