The Bhutan Broadcasting Service and Kuensel have been awarded the Jigme Singye Wangchuck Prestigious Journalism Award. The Journalist Association of Bhutan conferred the award today in recognition of its long-standing contribution to public service journalism in the country. The award is the country’s highest journalism award that recognises an individual or institution for their outstanding contributions in journalism.

Founded in 1973 as the country’s first radio broadcaster, BBS later expanded into television and digital platforms, delivering nationwide public service broadcasting and reaching communities across the country, including remote areas.

Similarly, established in 1965, Kuensel evolved from a government bulletin into Bhutan’s first national newspaper, providing news, analysis and educational content that promoted public awareness.

According to the Journalists’ Association of Bhutan, the jury acknowledged the pivotal role BBS and Kuensel play in informing, educating and engaging the public, particularly during the reign of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.

Rinzin Wangchuk, the executive director of JAB said, “Kuensel is the oldest in terms of newspapers, and for television and radio, BBS is the oldest media house. These two media houses were the main institutions that were dedicated to disseminating information and educating people, especially during His Majesty the Fourth King. Moreover, they have also contributed to the development of journalism. Therefore, the Jury has recognised these two institutions for the award.”

Representatives from both institutions said the award held deep significance as it recognised the collective efforts of generations of journalists and media professionals.

BBS CEO Dorji Tashi said, “This award has fueled our energy to play a more active and constructive role. Firstly, in battling against the fake news which is on the rise. Moreover, to also play a meaningful role in actualising the visions of our country and the national projects.”

Kuensel’s CEO Ugyen Penjor said, “I believe this award highlights the vital role of the media. As social media continues to grow, people from all walks of life are exposed to all kinds of information. It therefore reminds us of our responsibility to provide accurate and reliable information.”

As the recipient of the prestigious award, the institutions reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen public trust by delivering accurate, responsible and inclusive journalism in the service of the nation.
