In an effort to address challenges faced by the inclusive schools and increase the number of Special Education Needs or SEN teachers, the education ministry has selected close to 20 teachers for master’s in inclusive studies. The education and skills development minister shared this during the meet the press session today. It is one of the government’s initiatives to strengthen inclusivity.

Some of the SEN schools currently do not have adequate SEN teachers, lack training for mainstream teachers to teach SEN students, and education materials. These challenges result in SEN students unable to continue their studies after class 10.

To address these issues, the education and skills development ministry is recruiting and deploying inclusive education teachers to SEN schools across the country.

The ministry has selected 15 teachers to pursue Master’s in Inclusive Education at the Paro College of Education. Two teachers will study masters in Australia under the Australian Awards Scholarship 2026.

Moreover, the minister said that teachers from 50 inclusive schools in the country will also receive intensive training on inclusive education in January next year. The training is expected to equip teachers with the skills to design and develop specialised teaching and learning materials tailored to diverse learner needs.

Yeezang De Thapa, Education and Skills Development Minister said, “About 200 teachers will receive three weeks training covering key areas such as inclusive education concepts, development of adaptation and accommodation strategies, intervention strategies, screening and educational assessment tools, development of individualized education plans, and the referral processes.”

Furthermore, the minister said the training will be extended to general teachers in all schools to enable effective application of inclusive practices.

“In addition, the inclusive ECCD training package is being finalized in collaboration with Save the Children. This initiative will help strengthen inclusive learning approaches right from the foundational years.”

These initiatives are expected to contribute to a more inclusive education system for Bhutanese children.
