In a show of solidarity, communities from the country came together to raise funds for the Bhutan Health Trust Fund. The fund continues to assist the government in providing free healthcare services. In the last three years, 11 districts raised more than Nu 9 M.
Established in 2000 under a Royal Charter, the Bhutan Health Trust Fund or BHTF, finances the procurement of 430 essential drugs and four vaccines that reach health facilities across the country.
Contributions from individuals, communities, and Bhutanese living abroad are strengthening the fund’s capacity to sustain this vital service.
Currently, the fund holds a principal amount of Nu 4.3bn.
Last year alone, the fund spent over Nu 557 M to procure essential drugs and vaccines.
The Health Minister Tandin Wangchuk emphasised that the Charter guides every ngultrum spent and that the funds are never misused.
“The Bhutan Health Trust Fund’s resources are used responsibly and in full compliance with the Royal Charter. But everyone should know that this is not just the government’s responsibility; it belongs to all of us. Even the smallest contribution can make a lasting difference in ensuring free and sustainable health care for our future generations.”
Officials say such voluntary contributions reflect a growing sense of ownership among the people, symbolising the country’s collective spirit and shared commitment.
