Residents of Jomotshangkha Dungkhag in Samdrup Jongkhar are still waiting for the government to fulfill its pledge to open the Jomotshangkha border gate for tourists. The government pledged to make it as an official entry and exit point for tourists, which would help boost the local economy and tourism in the region.

Hopes for economic growth remain uncertain, as there are no talks on opening of the gate at Jomotshangkha.

Guman Singh Geylal, Langchenphu Gup said, “Currently, only day visitors come to the town and temples. If tourists are allowed to enter from here, our economy will improve. From Jomotshangkha, they can also travel to Lauri and Merak.”

Jai Narayan Dal, a resident said, “There will be parks and hotels for tourists. For development, we need more people visiting here. So, if tourists are allowed to come, this place will develop.”

During the meet the press session yesterday, the government said enabling entry and exit through Jomotshangkha remains a priority.

But its implementation requires adequate infrastructure and sufficient tourist flow which are limited at present.

Namgyal Dorji, Minister for Industry, Commerce and Employment said, “We hope and aim to develop the gate as the Daranga one. But, to make such a gate, we need tourists and infrastructure. When right time comes, the Jomotshangkha gate will be prioritised.”

For residents, the dream of tourism-led development stays alive, as they hope the government’s pledge will one day become reality.
