Phuentshogling, often seen as just a transit route for tourists, is now making strides to establish itself as a destination of its own. With several successful tourist spots developed, the Amochhu bridge has emerged as one of the popular attractions. However, the lack of basic amenities continues to be a concern.
The Amochhu bridge, located on the way to Samtse from Phuentshogling, has now become a major tourist hotspot.
Alongside the grand modern arch bridge for vehicles, the site also features a suspension bridge, popularly known among visitors as the ‘hanging bridge.’
Adding to its charm is a food truck that serves travellers on site.
On average, more than 80 tourists visit the spot each day, and during the peak season, hundreds of visitors from India flock here daily to enjoy the experience.
However, the site currently lacks basic amenities like water and toilets.
Nidhi, a tourist said, “As of now, there are no toilets. I feel there should be toilet facility separately, for male and female. It is a necessity. The area is clean and having a toilet will only add to it.”
Sanjana Devi, another tourist said, “Bhutan is a beautiful place. It is cool and pleasant. People are also nice. However, in this area, there is a need for a toilet. Otherwise, everything is beautiful.”
Kezang Thinley, the owner of Food on Wheels said, “Tourists coming here say the place is clean and beautiful. However, everyone has been saying that basic amenities like toilets are not available. I have also written to the Dungkhag for approval to construct toilets and would be really grateful if it can be approved.”
According to Dungkhag officials, amenities have not yet been developed as they are still studying the long-term sustainability of the site.
Karma Jurmi, Phuentshogling Dungpa said, “Yes, we have not been able to provide the basic amenities like water and toilet facilities. That is because we have to study the long-term sustainability of the site. If everything goes well, we have plans to develop the site.”
Today, even without basic amenities, the Amochhu bridge continues to draw visitors every day. With better facilities in the future, the site holds the potential to attract more visitors in Phuentshogling.
