People in Bhutan can now sign and verify documents electronically through the Bhutan National Digital Identity (NDI). A newly launched feature, the Digital Signature Platform, ensures that online signatures are secure, verifiable, and legally valid. The platform was launched today.
At present, most people in Bhutan sign documents electronically by pasting an image of their handwritten or scanned signature onto files. Others rely on email confirmations as consent or authorisation.
According to the Bhutan NDI, these practices often expose documents to forgery, tampering, and legal disputes.
The new Digital Signature Platform on NDI addresses these problems by ensuring that only the rightful document owner can generate a valid signature.
Since the NDI wallet holds each citizen’s verifiable credentials, every signature is secured through decentralised identification.
The application also provides a verification portal where users can re-upload signed documents to check their authenticity. The system verifies the signature, timestamp, sequence, and integrity, even years after signing.
DHI says NDI protects personal data while promoting inclusivity and accessibility for all.
With the Digital Signature Platform, DHI says the country positions itself at the forefront of digital ecosystems, offering a secure and future-proof way to sign documents with lasting authenticity.
