If everything goes as planned, Tsirang will have an economic hub, a new market space similar to Kaja Throm in other districts by the mid of next year. The new facility will be agro-based with designated spots to sell vegetables, fruits and other farm produce. The Tsirang District Administration is currently finalising the design and expects to float the tender for its construction by next month.
The new facility will be constructed around the swimming pool area in Damphu town. It will be equipped with modern amenities with stalls for interested farmers of all 12 gewogs of the district.
The hub will primarily promote organic farm produce and will allow imported items only if there is a demand during the off-season. The plan was shared during the Tsirang Dzongkhag Tshogdu session earlier this week.
The district administration has allocated Nu 15 M for the project.
“Despite farmers producing huge quantities of vegetables and fruits, currently, we do not have a proper space where they can sell their farm produce. We have the weekend vegetable market, where they can do business only once a week. We all have seen the benefits of Kaja Throm to farmers in other districts,” said Karma Dorji, Tsirang Dzongrab.
“We are investing in the economic hub basically to boost farmers’ income, create employment opportunities for youth, and attract tourists. It is also aimed at making Damphu town economically vibrant and more attractive,” said Ugyen, Economic Development and Marketing Officer, Tsirang.
Once complete, the facility will provide Tsirang’s farmers with a better marketplace to sell their produce. More than 90 per cent of the district’s population actively engages in farming.
