For better connectivity and to boost tourism and economic activities, the newly upgraded and widened Wanakha–Haa Highway was inaugurated yesterday. Originally built in 1974, the road has long served as a key transport corridor for Haa district. Its upgradation to Primary National Highway standards comes at a time when the region is being actively promoted for tourism and economic development.
Project DANTAK constructed the road with financial support from the Government of India.
Spanning nearly 60 kilometres, the road connects Paro and Haa districts.
Officials said construction was particularly challenging due to the demanding terrain and harsh conditions, often having to face setbacks during the process. It took around six years to complete the project.
Brigadier Rohit Gupta, the chief engineer of the Project DANTAK said, “This stretch posed formidable challenge, unpredictable weather, steep gradients, and fragile geology. Yet, our dedicated teams of engineers, supervisors, machine operators and labourers worked with determination, often braving the elements bringing this project to fruition.”
Speaking at the inauguration, Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay said the road represents more than just an infrastructure upgrade. He highlighted its potential to ease travel and improve economic activity in the communities along the route.
“This road is going to transform agriculture and livestock prospects of the people of Haa and Naja Gewog. It is also going to add to economic prosperity by enhancing trade and tourism, international and domestic tourism.”
Once a narrow, winding single-lane road with sharp turns and curves, the route posed difficulties for those transporting goods. Farmers now hope the improved road will ease one of their biggest challenges, high transport costs.
Jamphel Dorji, the Naja Mangmi in Paro said, “Before, when farmers had to transport their produce, the transportation cost was high. Now with the road having been widened and maintained, we hope the transportation costs will go down and help the farmers.”
Residents and officials alike hope the newly upgraded road will pave the way for faster development.
