To tackle future congestion and support inmate reintegration, a new skill-based rehabilitation centre in Yarju in Wangdue Phodrang, is being constructed. It is expected to open in two years’ time.

Chamgang Central prison in Thimphu is the largest prison in the country. Though the prison’s capacity is 400, the prison currently has more than 600 inmates.

Today, nearly 1300 inmates are being deployed across 20 open-air prisons nationwide, with the majority being placed at the Gyalsung project sites. This is the immediate solution to the overcrowding in prisons.

As part of the long-term strategic solution, the construction of Yarju wholesome Open Air Prison project began in November last year.

Home Minister Tshering said, “After the completion of the Yarju Wholesome open-air prison project, it will be able to house 500 inmates.”

Currently, there are 2159 prisoners in the country.
