For the students of Dorokha Central School in Samtse, summer vacation is proving to be more than just a regular break. It is becoming a meaningful experience. The school initiated a programme to engage students in their communities. According to the school administration, the initiative is designed to nurture a sense of belonging and service to the very community that has supported and raised them.
This summer break, students are seen cleaning public spaces, maintaining pathways, planting trees, and preserving water sources in their communities.
The programme requires them to engage in community service for a minimum of 15 hours during the summer break alongside their other personal commitments.
The school planned the initiative in consultation with parents and local leaders last year.
“The initiative requires the students to support and serve their communities when they are on vacation, whether they live in urban or rural areas. Instead of staying idle, it lets them help their parents and the community,” said Udai N Bhattarai, Principal, Dorokha Central School, Samtse.
“I have planted a variety of flowers at the Shivalaya temple. Additionally, I cut the grass in its surroundings and made gardens. Such activities would benefit me in the future,” said Rajen Rai, Student, Dorokha Central School, Samtse.
“Engaging in such community service benefits us. It is because whatever we do can be an example to younger generations,” said Chitra Bdr Ghalley, Student, Dorokha Central School, Samtse.
“Starting last year, we were instructed to do community service in our village, society or community. That will help the communities and let us grow through experience,” said Hem Kumar Ghalley, Student, Dorokha Central School, Samtse.
Parents are supportive of this meaningful vision of the school.
“This summer break, our children are setting aside time to engage in activities that benefit our community. We would like to thank our children and youth, and we hope they continue such meaningful acts and progress in life,” said Suk Bdr Rai, Parent, Samtse.
The school administration said that these small, yet purposeful acts, not only benefit the community but also build essential life skills in students.
“With the support of parents and local leaders, the school will plan carefully and learn from past mistakes. We will continue this initiative in the future to encourage our students to take up community service with dedication and interest,” said Udai N Bhattarai, Principal, Dorokha Central School, Samtse.
Through the programme, students learn the values of teamwork, leadership, humility and gratitude.
More than just fulfilling engagement, students are learning to be contributors, not just beneficiaries of society. This, according to the administration, is how they build a generation that cares.
With the spirit of giving back instilled from a young age, the school is shaping responsible and compassionate youth for the times to come.
